Is my family member eligible? / How much are they entitled to?

Where an individual has a ‘primary health need’ (i.e. their primary need for care is a health need), we can help secure NHS funding to cover the cost of care. You can find out more about how an individual is assessed here. If you’re not sure if your family member meets the criteria, but they do require full time care and have health needs, we strongly recommend that you contact us to find out if they are eligible for Continuing Healthcare funding.

Each case is unique, and as such we cannot put an exact figure on the amount of funding your family member is entitled to. Speak to one of our funding experts on 0800 049 2062 for more information.

My family member has a house or savings. Do they have to pay for their care?

This is one of the most common questions asked and the simple answer here is ‘No’.
It is not a person’s money, property or other assets which determine if they have to pay for their care – it is simply their health and care needs. If an individual meets the NHS Continuing Healthcare criteria then they do not have to pay, regardless of how much or how little money they have. You can read more about the NHS Continuing Healthcare checklist and Decision Support Tool used to assess eligibility here.

I’m confused by all of the different assessments that are needed! Can you help?

Continuing Healthcare Direct provide full support to all clients who are looking to secure NHS Continuing Healthcare funding, so please don’t panic! We aim to make the process as quick and easy as possible. There are two main assessments during the process:

  • NHS Continuing Healthcare Checklist
  • Decision Support Tool

You can read about the details of these assessments and the funding process itself in more detail here.

How long does funding take?

A decision about an individual’s eligibility for Continuing Healthcare funding is normally made within 28 days of a completed checklist or request for full assessment being received. Click here for further details.

We’ve been successful in securing funding, when will the funding start?

Great news! Funding should be backdated to shortly after the date of the NHS Continuing Healthcare Checklist. You can find more information about this in The National Framework Guidelines (Annex F).
